For quite a while yum hasn't done anything for me. eg

FC9: yum stopped working

Fedora maintenance schedule is for the current version and the most previous version. The current version is 11, pervious version is 10, and you're running 9. It looks like your OS is out of maintenance; there are tools available in the package manager to upgrade to the latest version - or you could just download the latest install DVD, burn it, and install from that. Fedora 9->11 is a tricky upgrade I believe if you do it through the upgrade tools online.

As Roxoff said. Fedora releases hit end of life ~13 months or so. It's generall 2 releases plus one month. So Fedora 9 hit end of life 1 month after Fedora 11 was released.
