D-link DWA 547 wirless network not working in Fedora 10

    Hi all,

I am very new to this forum and was wondering if anyone can help. I have installed fedora 10 as I want to install virtualbox and get some oracle databases up and running. I wanted to connect to the internet via my wireless connection but I cannot connect to my router within Fedora 10. I've looked all over the internet and this forum to find a solution but cannot find one.

Network Manager can see my wireless router and it prompts me for my password but it just says that the conneciton was lost. I'm not sure what else to do to firstly get a connection and secondly connect to the internet.

I have Fedora 10 on a dual boot with Windows 7 with a D-Link DWA 547 wirless adapter. The wireless adapter works fine in Windows 7 but I don't know if i'm not doing anything correctly or something isn't configured properly.

I'm hoping someone can help me.

    Thanks

    Sunny

    Hello, welcome to Linux Forums!

We need some detailed information before we can suggest any help. Read the thread linked to below, and run the script in the second section. It will retrieve the needed information, which you should then post in this thread.

    Thanks for the info.

I see three network devices in your system. The last one looks to be the wireless.
    Code:
01:04.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller [11ab:4320] (rev 13)
    Kernel driver in use: skge
    Kernel modules: skge
    01:07.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ [10ec:8139] (rev 10)
    Kernel driver in use: 8139too
    Kernel modules: 8139too, 8139cp

01:0a.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. Device [168c:0029] (rev 01)
    Kernel driver in use: ath9k
    Kernel modules: ath9k
I don't know what the first one is (Marvell), but I will assume that it is a wired LAN card and that you only have one wireless card. Is this correct?

It is using the ath9k driver.
    Code:
    Module Size Used by
    ath9k 230940 0
    mac80211 173668 1 ath9k
    cfg80211 23816 1 mac80211
It doesn't appear to show any of the network devices, only showing the default loopback and virtual devices.
    Code:
    ============ ifconfig ============
    lo Link encap:Local Loopback
    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
    inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
    RX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:12 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:800 (800.0 b) TX bytes:800 (800.0 b)

    virbr0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 76:540:B2:31B

    TX packets:28 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:5242 (5.1 KiB)
Do you have any internet connection with this PC? From what I see, you don't. I think that you need to configure the devices first. Open the "Network" program from the main menu. You need to click on the desired device to highlight it, then click the "Edit" button. You can also start the network configuration GUI with a terminal command. But first gain root privileges using the "su" command.
    Code:
    system-config-network
How you set it up is your choice, but I usually tell it to use NetworkManager and DHCP for all of the network connections. I don't have the wireless start up at boot. It usually needs a password to connect, which it can't give until you log in. This will just delay the boot process until it gives up and continues the boot up.

One other thing is to upgrade to the newest available kernel. Fedora 10 is starting to get old, as Fedora 12 is getting ready for release in 10 days. If this is a new install, you may want to wait and use that one instead. The reason I suggest this, is because your wireless driver (ath9k) is rather new. It has had heavy development, and a newer kernel will have a newer version of the driver. You can also install the latest version of the wireless driver in your current distro, but only if you need to.

Edit: Here is a link to a graphical How-To on setting up the network devices. It says that it is for Fedora 8, but it should be similar to Fedora 10. It says to not have the wired connection start at boot, but I would change that and allow it.

I have 2 LAN connections which is apart of my motherboard and the Marvell is one of them. If I run Windows 7 which is my other boot system, wireless connects fine. How do I update the Kernal? The reason I have chosen Fedora 10 is because I want to install virtualbox and Oracle and I'm not sure how stable Fedora 11 is to handle these? Could you share some light on this?

How do I install a newer version of my wireless driver?

Thanks for the link, I will follow those instructions and see how I get on.

Before doing anything else, configure the network devices. The wired ones should have been configured during the install process. I don't understand why they didn't.

    Hi,

I've tried configuring the devices as per your last thread and no luck. I have run the script again that you provided and here are the results:

No luck? All of the network devices are now showing up! I see that you actually have three LAN devices, and one wireless device:

It looks like they will all now work. Have you clicked on the NetworkManager icon to connect? It is usually in the taskbar, next to the Date/Time. Right click it too, for options.

No luck at all...it tries to connect and I try to connect it via Network Manager and it tries and tries but then it just says it's not connected.

I've downloaded the latest stable version of the Kernel 2.6.31.5. Do you think I should install this to see if it works? If so could you give me some instructions on how to install this?

    Thanks

    Sunny

You are better off if you only install programs using the Fedora package manager, YUM. Otherwise you could run into dependency problems, and YUM will take care of these. I don't know if that kernel is available for Fedora 10, though.

There is a GUI for YUM, called the YUM Extension. To install it, plug in one of the working LAN internet connections and run this command.
    Code:
    su -c 'yum install yumex'
What you really want is the latest driver for your wireless. The best way to get this is to use the latest driver source. This can be found by using the compat-wireless sources. It is a collection of most of the open source Linux drivers, the ath9k included.

    Download - Linux Wireless

Since this is source code, you will need to compile it. First you need to install some prerequisites. Use YUM to install these:

    kernel source (aka: kernel-devel)
    kernel headers
    gcc

Then, follow the instructions from the compat-wireless download page
