256 MB RAM is plenty, especially if you're not running a GUI.

RedHat has a hardware compatibility page that covers this server and information.

Not sure if 256GB is a typo or if the above posters mis-read, but I have used cent os on a box with 64GB. The only problem we had was related to the network adapters my client got.

If it was a typo, and you meant 256mb, yes it will, but compiling and running test suites will be very slow. I am upgrading my development box from 512 to 2048, only cost me $50

Well there was confusion [by other posters] so I felt there was some value in asking for clarification

RedHat has a hardware compatibility page that covers this server and information.
I just searched for it and didn't find it. It just lists specific versions of hardware that is certified to work. Care to link us where a quantitative answer can be found then?

tjvenky ,is it GB or MB ? So far I never heard people using 256GB RAM.
At max, I have seen people using 32GB or 64GB RAM .

    Hi,

Sun X4600M server supports up to 512GB of memory. So this question about 256 GB not 256 MB

    Try this link

I think you need RHEL 4 AS with hugemem kernel.

    Thanks again.

Thanks to all for your valuable replies. I have a project that requires huge memory 256GB(not MB) for their application to support. The server is Sun X4600M2 and it supports 512GB memory. I want to make sure if RHEL 4 supports 256GB.

As per the link that ursusca provided, server with AMD64/Intel 64 CPUs should support 256GB/1TB (Certified/Theoretical)

Thanks to ursusca for the link.

    Thanks to all.
