Newbie to Linux

I am using USB 3d Sound dongle to play and record sounds. I use aplay and arecord commands. Aplay is working fine for playing wav files.

when i record through arecord, there is no output on the wav file except noise.

Wat's the procedure for recording through external microphone. I have used alsamixer command and set the capture volume to maximum. No break through.

Please advise me.
