I'm having the same problem in another thread.

Can you post exact error message. How did you build the nvidia driver?

Working for me. I downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.42-pkg2.run from the nvidia website and compile the module myself. When I install a new kernel, I:
1 Boot into runlevel 3 (actually, I always do this, but you should do it here)
2. as root: sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.42-pkg2.run
3. as root: modprobe nvidia
4. startx

Unfortunately, when you update the kernel you will also have to reinstall the nvidia driver. It's a PITA, I agree. I used to have to do this with VirtualBox as well, but they've fixed that since 3.0. Anyway, you have to boot into runlevel 3 (text login), rerun the nvidia .run installation script (chose for it NOT to update xorg.conf - you are keeping your old settings) - startx should now get your gui going (as a test). Assuming it is ok, reboot the OS to runlevel 5 (GUI login). It usually takes me about 15 minutes for the entire process when I update the kernel.

I don't run Fedora so I cannot say why you are having this problem with 12. In any case, the installer should install the module - you should not need to run modprobe to do so. Do make sure you have the correct installation file - 32bit one for 32bit os, 64bit for 64bit os.

Make sure you specify the correct video board you are using in the driver search on the nvidia site. If it doesn't come up with a candidate, tell it to also search beta drivers. For example, my D630 Dell laptop uses a Quadro NVS 135M which doesn't have a current linux driver (either 32bit or 64bit), but does have a beta driver from late 2007. Right now, my Ubuntu 9.04 uses the default nvidia driver which seems to work ok, but I might try that one to see how it goes.
