What distribution+version are you trying to install? RHEL 5.x, Fedora Core 11, or what? I've had really good luck with Dell Latitude laptops and Ubuntu. Haven't tried RH-based distributions on them, but I've had 0 problems with a D600, D630, and an Inspirion 9300 (17"). All the FN+ keys, wireless (including Bluetooth), webcams, and such seem to work out-of-the-box. I use CentOS (RHEL derivative) on my workstation, but then I don't use wireless on that except a USB Bluetooth dongle for my Skype headset, just a webcam which I had to futz with a bit to get functional.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Like I said in the title F12, which is turning out to be a real problem child with numerous kernel traps.
The more I try to configure the more issues arise
I can't even run something as simple as samba config with out a seg fault.
Every so often an organization release a product before it's ready.
Just look at Windows XP, how many "service packs" did it take before they got it right.
Why should the linux world be any different?
So I dropping this OS like it were vista and trying F 11
I'm not saying that F12 is a garbage release, it just doesn't appear to be well tested on my particular machine.
Hopefully F 10 won't have the same issues.
I'll create a new help request as needed with F11 issues, btw: thanks for the links to fixing some of the issues, too bad it will be a few days before I get to try them out.

Fedora is known for being a bleeding edge distro. Every time I've looked run it, it's given me troubles. Although, F12 worked better for me than the other releases I've looked at. Though I haven't tried to do much with it yet. But basic hardware support is generally comparable to other mainstream distros, and sometimes better. (They have some broadcom cards working out of the box using only free software, which is something Ubuntu 9.10 does not do.)
