Nvidia Driver on Fedora 12 x86_64
Hello everyone,
I have just installed the latest Fedora 12 64bit on my PC, I downloaded the latest driver from nVidia for my 9800GTX+ graphics card.
I tried to install the driver and I have the following error:
Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most
frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or
improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs
from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as
rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from
obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU
installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics
I have googled for sometime and I tried:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.42-pkg2.run -k$(uname -r)
the driver was installed with no errors, but X did not start (monitor was flickering) and I had to reinstall the entire system. so now I am stuck at the first error again.
thanks a lot for your help.

Have you tried installing the nvidia driver from the yum repository? It should at least work for you, giving how bleading edge FC12 happens to be, since it should have been validated as installable on an FC12 system.

is it possible to have full accelerated 3d support without instaling nVidia driver??
in the device manager the graphics card is just mentioned like this:
nVidia Corporation Direct Rendering Manager Device
but when I try to run anything that needs 3D support, I have this message:
Your system currently is not capable of hardware accelerated 3D.
Or:
Accelerated 3D graphics is not available.

Yes, you need an nVidia driver to get the full capabilities out of the hardware. The default vesa driver cannot do that. There should be a more capable nvidia driver in the yum repository for your system. Look in the package manager for that.

similar problem
I have had a similar problem. I was using the nvidia driver in Fedora 11. When I upgraded to Fedora 12, it no longer works. I have downloaded the latest nvidia drivers through ATrpms, but to no avail. After installing the drivers and rebooting, the startup proceeds just fine until it's time to start the X server (gdm, I think), then the screen just flickers. I have to use Alt-F2 to open a new terminal, log in as root, remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, then I can startx or reboot, at which point F12 uses the nouveau driver instead.
Whenever I try running nVidia's own installation routine, I get the same error message as electrondevil. I have tried both the 190 and 195 (beta) drivers, but to no avail.
I wish I knew what the problem was. I miss having Desktop Effects.
I am running kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64. I have a GeForce 7150M video card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Shalom/Salaam/Peace!
Jeff

problem in installing nvidia
[QUOTE=electrondevil;743895]Hello everyone,
I have just installed the latest Fedora 12 32bit on my notebook, I downloaded the latest driver from nVidia for my nvidia geforce 105M graphics card.
I tried to install the driver and I have the following error:
Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most
frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or
improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs

I have googled for sometime and I tried:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run -k$(uname -r)
the driver was installed with no errors, but X did not start (monitor was flickering)
what shall i do?
