Unhappy Trouble upgrading to PHP 5.3 on CentOS

I am a noob to Linux, and I'm having trouble upgrading PHP from 5.2.9 to 5.3 on my CentOS server.

I ran "yum update php" but I get this error:
    Error: No Package Matching php

Then I tried downloading a repo from Webtatic and following the upgrade instruction there ...but I got the same error.
(I can't post the link because I am new here)

    Can anyone help me out?

Is there a specific feature in php5.3 you need? Usually its best and much less hassle to stick with what the package manager provies.

I want to use the 'pixelate' filter for images.
It just seems much more simple than that next best way I've seen to pixelate images in PHP.
