KDE is just one of many graphical desktops that you see when you log on to a Linux machine, unless it has Gnome or any other Desktop. I'd say the purpose of it is to make it easier for you to use your machine in a way that you want. Isn't that the purpose of any desktop environment?

I just installed SuSE 11.2 with KDE last night on my old laptop for fun, and I'd never used KDE before... finding it difficult to get used to... but not sure if it's KDE that's difficult or SuSE?

KDE will take some time to get used to, more so for version 4.x than version 3.5. I think it's about the same on most Distros you'll find. A lot of people still don't like the new KDE for some one reason or another but it suits me just fine.

I see. Well I'll probably stick with it for a while and give it an honest try. Can you use KDE with Ubuntu? I'm thinking maybe it would be less confusing if I used KDE on a distro that I'm familiar with... or perhaps I should just reinstall SuSE with Gnome...

You can install KDE onto any distro as far as I know, They even have a KDE version for download it's called Kubuntu.

If you install Ubuntu you can install KDE on top using the command

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
You can then choose if you prefer to use KDE or Gnome at login

That's cool, I'm running Karmic on my new 64-bit system, I'll try that out! Thanks.

so I've installed the kubuntu desktop, but it didn't give me the option of choosing which desktop to boot to. But when it starts to boot, it shows Kubuntu in blue with a load bar, then after that, Ubuntu loads, then when I get to my desktop in Ubuntu, it looks the same except that the mouse pointer looks like KDE.

There should be a button on the log in screen that lets you choose which desktop to use
