FC12 fails to start after installing kmod-nvidia
Hello,
After installing nvidia drivers (sudo yum install kmod-nvidia), Fedora12 (kernel 2.6.31.12/5) fails to start. To be more exact, it show the 'loading screen', and then the screen gets all scrambled. Trying to switch the ttys doesn't work either (though I can boot in runlevel 3).
I know that there might be some conflicts with nouveu, but i followed the steps from 'Fedora Nvidia Driver Install Guide' (not allowed to post URLs), so I guess nouveu isn't exactly my problem(?).
Another puzzling thing about this, is that I can boot and use FC12 from VMware. No problems there. I also tried removing/reinstalling the kmod-nvidia (and everything else nvidia related), but the problem persists.
Specs: Intel core2duo t7300, nvidia 8600m gs, 2gb ram.
PS tried nvidia installer previously, and problem was the same, so I reinstalled FC12 at that time.
Any ideas about this?
Cheers

What kernel are you running?
Are you sure that this NVidia card is supported by the kmod-nvidia drivers?Code:uname -a

As it was a bit urgent, I already reinstalled F12 again, but let's keep this updated anyway.
uname -r (for 2.6.31.12): 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.i686.PAE
I'm not sure if 8600m GS is supported by kmod-nvidia, but on F9 the nvidia installer used to work perfectly. Since installer failed this time (it completed the installation properly, but after a reboot problem was the same as above), i googled up some 'nvdia drivers for fedora' guide, and it mentioned kmod-nvidia. That's why I tried it out.

When you used the "Installer" are you talking about the official driver from the Nvidia website? If yes, when you used the installer, did you remove kmod-nvidia? If not, then that might be part of the problem. Exactly which version did you install?

Yes, I am talking about the official installer from nvidia site.
As I said, I already had to reinstall F12 twice. First time i used the official installer (v190.53 for Linux 32bit). Then I reinstalled F12 and tried kmod-nvidia. Same story both times.

I see what you are saying, I'm guessing that the Nouveau driver didn't work either? Did you try using the vesa driver, just to get the system up and running?

From what I see, Nouveau is installed by default. If it is, then I'm running it right now. As for getting the system running, it works just fine without kmod/nvidia drivers installed. The only drawback of this, is that I don't get any 3d acceleration. Well, I guess I'll just have to live with that for now

Try this guide, F12,F11 & F10 Nvidia driver guides - FedoraForum.org. Worked well for me on three computers with NVidia cards.

Thanks glennzo, I'll give that guide a go when I finish some work that needs to be done. Update in ~3 days.

I have installed the latest versions of the nVidia driver on my Fedora 12 install, with no problems. I am referring to the driver that you download from the nVidia web site. My card is an AGP 6800XT
You may want to try an older archived version of the driver. Maybe there is a problem in the newer driver for your card.Paul
