Is there a default media player in linux such as windows media/ if so what is the name of it or can i download one that works with linux, i would like for the player to not only play music but watch videos as well.

The default media player changes from one distribution to the next depending on what packages are included with the distribution.
I personally like Mplayer and VLC, but others prefer different players.

I tend to use VLC as well, although the default ones shipped by most distros are capable of playing most formats if you install the right codecs. In Fedfora if you want the codecs, setup the rpmfusion yum repository.
