Do you mean RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 4.0 or actually Red Hat Linux 4.0?
Either way, both versions are old and outdated. If you must install Red Hat, get the latest version of RHEL (5.4), or forget about using Red Hat and install Fedora 12 instead.
I would bet that your problems are related to hardware that is not supported in those older versions. That is why using the latest version is so important. If you do not have a RHEL license, then it is really not advisable to install it. It is not a free Linux distribution.Paul

Welcome to the forums!

If you are trying to install the really old version of Red Hat 4.x as you suggested above, it was released some time around 1997 so it won't work well at all with modern computer hardware such as new hard drives, motherboards, etc.
If you meant you are trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux, you can pickup the latest version of CentOS, which is the same thing as RHEL, but without the Red Hat logos, subscription fees, and paid support:
www.centos.org - The Community ENTerprise Operating System
Of course, another option is to install Fedora, as suggested above.oz
