Angry RHEL 4 does not boot

    Hello folks,

I just did a fresh install of an RHEL 4 on a Fujitsu Primergy server.

However when i try to boot, the machine restarts all over again.

    The kernel version is: 2.6.9-42
The server use an intel Xeon processor with Sata Disks and an LSI MegaRaid controller.

I hit a wall with this one.
Anyone knows what i could do to overcome this problem.

Don't install old versions of any distro. Always use the newest version available.

    I kinda have to.

I dont have another licensed version. So I gotta use this one, and if installed properly update it.

The problem could be related to the fact that you are using SATA disks. RHEL was released when SATA wasn't popular, so the support for SATA devices is not that great. Try RHEL 5 if possible or use a free RHEL rebuild like CentOS or Scientific Linux if you do not want to pay for a licence.

Is this a new PC, or did it have RHEL 4 installed in it before?

@daark.child, i saw on the net that people have found some problems with CentOS on hardware similar to mine.

@waterhead Yes it is a brand new machine. I tried installing Fedora 9(not the latest, i know) before, but it wouldnt recognize the disks.

You could always install the operating system on a separate PATA drive. Then you could install the SATA drivers and set up the RAID afterwards. I would still keep the OS on the PATA drive

Boot into the BIOS. There should be a setting that will let the OS see the sata drives as pata (legacy support for sata-unaware operating systems). However, it will only let you see 4 drives on the sata controller that way.

And you aren't having problems? If you get the latest version of CentOS, it will essentially be a clone of the latest RHEL. It has all of the RHEL graphics changed to CentOS graphics.
