KDE 4 Questions...first off root permissions with kwrite

    Hi All,

I'm trying to edit my fstab (I don't get why Fedora still won't support ntfs mounts at install), but I am having problems doing things as root (opening dolphin, using kwrite, etc...)

    When I do

su -c 'kwrite /etc/fstab' it prompts for my password and then just hangs, I know the password is write because I can do 'su -c 'yum install package' and it works no problem. Any ideas? I can't run dolphin, nautilus, gedit (installed after), kwrite, etc...

How do I edit my fstab if I can't get in as root?

When did you get this error? While installing a package? Try
    Code:
    yum update
    rpm --rebuilddb

Are you already running Fedora 13?
If so, then that's going to lead to some of your issues.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Same thing as jayd512 was getting at. Your repos seem to be pointing to rawhide, at least rpmfusion here is. That's going to mess everything up, or has messed everything up. I'm not sure how easy it will be to fix, especially if you just updated everything.

yeah you both are right, so I try to remake my USB install, fails five times, no clue how I did it so easily the first time. Installed again with my cd (Fedora 11), now upgrading to 12....accidentally installed Gnome instead of KDE so that'll be the next challenge, removing gnome completely and getting KDE 4 back....I now understand why so many refer to Ubuntu as the newbie one, seems much harder to screw things up in *buntu, but I'm sticking with Fedora, if Linus Torvalds uses it, I have to at least give it a fair try

Nah. You don't. I try Fedora every release or two, and I continually find it too much work to bother. (Although I was happy to see my Broadcom bcm4318 card works out of the box in Fedora 12, a first for any distro.)

Anyway, in the interview where Linus mentions Fedora, he specifically said he only used it because it supported his powerpc well at the time and he got used to it, but that he didn't care about the distro, he just wanted it to be easy.

Which I think is a fair summary of what most of us look for. I use Arch because I find it the most intuitive and easy for me. At this point, Ubuntu and all those seem too confusing and troublesome to me. If Ubuntu is your happy place, why not use it?

to tell you the truth it's gotten a bit buggy for me and that's why I started to explore. I'm going to try Fedora for 6 months and my girlfriend will have Ubuntu 10.04 on hers so I can see both of them and decide which one. She's been having worst bugs than me in Ubuntu, the latest is a major bug in Openoffice that I didn't get in Fedora's OOo (she couldn't convert one of her law files into a doc, crashed every damn time....still not sure where the bug is but it's there and it gave us a headache last night. So, I'll push through and see how it goes
