when i give init 6 the server hangs after completing the shutdown process..
the normal scenario will be the server will initiate a reboot but here what i have seen is the server is in hung state.. it just gives a blank screen..

You need to look at the log files to see what process is not terminating and hanging the reboot. Since you are running a Xen-enabled kernel, do you have any virtual machines running when you do the do the shutdown/reboot? Also, you say you are changing the runlevel to 6 (reboot). What happens when you issue the reboot command itself - I presume you are doing a telinit 6 instead?

The /var/log/messages doesn't give anything related to the same. yes its a XEN enabled kernel but this issue is noticed even when no VMs are running on it.
Also just to cross check, we installed RHEL on a server (same make model) and the reboot was happening properly..

Sounds like a problem with Oracle's version of RHEL then... Drop them a nasty-gram about this.
