    Bootable backup on existing drive holding win 7

    Hi there!

    I'm new to these forums (and still a bit to linux) and I have a question;

    I have Fedora 12 installed on an external harddrive (USB) and have it configured the way I want. Inside my laptop I'm working on I have a Win 7 installation. My plan is to slowly migrate to Fedora and only use Win 7 when needed, so far so good..

    I shrinked the partition on the internal drive holding using Win 7's built in tools and would like to clone my USB installation to the new partition I can now create, I work a lot with Macs in my line of work and there I always use Carbon Copy Cloner to make bootable backups, works like a charm..

    As far as I know CCC uses rsync which is available for Linux as well so I guess I could use that? I plan on editting the Win7 bootloader later on to make it possible to boot from the new Fedora partition.

    How would I go about it? The internal drive is GUID (or is it GPT?) formatted and loosing the Win 7 installation isn't an option of course.. All I could find were commandlines to backup certain folders or entire drives but I only want to backup my partition onto a different partition..

    Thanks ahead!

    Hi and Welcome !

    You can use PartImage to create bootable ISO image of any partition. I am using it for a long time and it works fine. Create an image of partition and install it in another.
    It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

    I am not recommending this, Just found it today. I was wondering what you might think of it devils casper. Since you
    create bootable ISO image of any partition.
    and I know you use tools like this in your job description. It is open source (maybe I should say freeware?) also. Not being a IT type of guy. I was just wondering.

    Hi devils casper, rokytnji,

    I took a look at both tools but for as far as I can see they both don't support ext4 which is what I need.. Partimage did point me to FSArchiver which does support ext4 but as far as I can see it's commandline only. Nothing wrong with commandline but I'm so used to/ charmed by how carbon copy cloner works that I was hoping for a linux equivelant..

    Looking on again!

    Patrick Verner over at Parted Magic is working on a simple script and GUI for using FSArchiver and PartClone together on the Parted Magic LiveCD. Both apps already come on the Parted Magic LiveCD and I think you can try out what he's done so far if you download the Parted Magic development version. See the "beefdrapes" link in Patrick's signature for the link to download it. I plan to try it out myself once it's just a bit further along.
