XServer problem - localhost login screen flashing

Whenever I have been starting up RH9 lately, I have been experiencing a problem with XServer where after the bootup screen and before the GUI login screen, RH9 will consistently present the localhost login screen every 10 seconds.

The monitor I am using is a Samsung SyncMaster 152T which wasnt available during the monitor selection scheme when I was installing Linux.

The graphis card I am using is an ATI Radeon 9200 SE which also wasnt available when selecting the graphis card for RH9 to detect. Instead I was forced to select the ATI Radeon 9100 since it was the closest option I had.

I read somewhere on RH's official site u have to configure some X86-ish backup file. I have some idea of how to access it through vi, but I have no idea what exactly should I be modifying.

I got this same problem!! I was gonna post a new topic about it, but I found this one... I actually have the same monitor as you too, except mine is the 753df model..

but ya I get that same crap your getting, I'm a total linux newbie and would love to use it! PLEASE could anybody help us?

my graphics card is the nvidia geforce 5200 model

EDIT: my screen just flickers, then I get the localhost login screen, then that flickers and then an error message thing pops up and says it cant start xserver...

Can you guys post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log. I'm not sure this is the file name, as I use Xorg, but it will be close to that. If at all possible, throw the file up on your personal webserver and link to it. It's easier to read when you have the whole screen.

theres just one little problem.. I cant get into linux at all and I dont know any command lines whatso-ever.. but I got BeOS 5 installed on another partition, so i'm guessing I could prolly boot up into that and mount the linux partition and copy and paste the info here... i'll try that..

    Hey Saurumont

Sorry bout the late reply but I got bogged down with Uni work. Anyways, here is my XFree86 config file.

    Code:
    # XFree86 4 configuration created by redhat-config-xfree86

    Section "ServerLayout"
    	Identifier "Default Layout"
    	Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
    	InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    	InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
    	InputDevice "DevInputMice" "AlwaysCore"
    EndSection

    Section "Files"

    # RgbPath is the location of the RGB database. Note, this is the name of the
    # file minus the extension (like ".txt" or ".db"). There is normally
    # no need to change the default.
    # Multiple FontPath entries are allowed (they are concatenated together)
    # By default, Red Hat 6.0 and later now use a font server independent of
    # the X server to render fonts.
    	RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb"
    	FontPath "unix/:7100"
    EndSection

    Section "Module"
    	Load "dbe"
    	Load "extmod"
    	Load "fbdevhw"
    	Load "glx"
    	Load "record"
    	Load "freetype"

    # To disable the XKEYBOARD extension, uncomment XkbDisable.

    # keyboard, you will probably want to use:

    # If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
    #	Option	"XkbModel"	"microsoft"
    #
    # Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
    # For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
    #	Option	"XkbLayout"	"de"
    # or:
    #	Option	"XkbLayout"	"de"
    #	Option	"XkbVariant"	"nodeadkeys"
    #
    # If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
    # control keys, use:
    #	Option	"XkbOptions"	"ctrl:swapcaps"
    # Or if you just want both to be control, use:
