    hardware problem?

Hi i'm new on this forum.
I'm italian and so my english may look a little strange..

I'm trying to install Red Hat 6.2 (Yes, i know that this is a very old ver.)on an old computer with cpu AMD 32 bit 1200 Mhz just to follow a "howto" on bind9 that
    requires this o.s. (masochism?)

I want to know ... is it that my cpu is not good for this ver: redhat-6.2-i386.iso

Have i to choose another iso file (maybe valid for amd)?

    Installation has gone OK.
With "linux rescue" i have changed the lilo.conf and so i can boot by floppy...

I have mounted my partition (/dev/hda5) in a new directory and checked
    if bin directory was inside...
i can see all the directories inside my partition so i think that installation was
    good..
But on the boot i only see:

"Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task!"
"In swapper task - not syncing"

    Is this a hardware problem?

    Another thing....

when i boot i can see a Trend ChipAwayVirus message that says "a virus wa detected on your hd ..etc,etc"; i choose to skip this message and so boot goes on

but the message is always kernel panic... blabla

    maybe my hd has problems?
I hope that i don't have to make another installation on a new HD!

    I hope was not boring!

    thanks you for your time
    Lorenzo

    Welcome to the forums!

The problem with RH 6.2 being so old (it's 10 years old now) is that few of the drivers needed for modern hardware will be included within the older kernel that comes with that release. If possible, you'd be better off to use a newer distribution and then find a bind howto that will work with that.

Otherwise, your CPU should be compatible with -i386.iso files.

Also, you will find that bind9 runs fine and is included in any up2date distribution.
So, no need to stick to that ancient one.

If you want to install RedHat based Linux only then go for latest version of Fedora or CentOS. Both are RedHat based, free to download and install.
Check the link in my signaute too.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
