RH8 wont recognize my newly added sata drives
Dear All,
I have recently added 2 500GB sata drives to my machine.
I have a Supermicro X6 mobo (yes its rather old) and the Bios recognizes the drives as Master 2 and Master 3 ide , but the linux will not recognize the drives.
The system is running RH8 kernel 2.4.31 and i dont have the option of upgrading the kernel at the moment.
Is there any way to get the linux to recognize the drives?
P.S - my system hdd is IDE.
Any help will be appriciated, Cheers

redhat 8 does not know about sata. It is way too old.
My advise would be:
- save your data and config
- install a up2date distributionYou must always face the curtain with a bow.

I don't have the option of upgrading, and I've seen it work when the entire pc uses only SATA, but i know its problematic when using both IDE and SATA, any ideas?

Sry, but I think upgrade is both the easiest and best option.

I agree with Irithori. You should consider upgrading RH. Its an obsolete distro. Is there any specific reason for using RH8 only?
Anyways, Some SATA chipsets have been supported since practically forever, as their programming interfaces are unchanged from PATA predecessors. Others are brand-new and require new drivers from scratch.
A few work arounds are listed here.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Welcome to the forums!
If you don't want to upgrade due to the fees associated with RHEL, you could consider using CentOS because it's the same thing, but without the Red Hat logos and paid support. I suggest it only because that would probably be the easier route, but do understand there might be other circumstances preventing an upgrade.
Best of luck with your project.

I cant upgrade because its a work computer that the company uses for specific tasks, and this distro has been used forever and eventually they'll update, but i dont think they'll do it on account of me adding sata drives.
But thanks to everyone for their input and i'll try some of the workarounds offered.
Cheers everyone

In that case, it might be better to swap the SATA drives for some IDE drives. Most of the online retailers have IDE drives for some pretty good prices these days and I'm thinking that IDE drives not be available for too much longer.
Either way, best of luck with the project!oz

Check your Machine's BIOS too. RH9 couldn't detect SATA disk in three machines of my Lab and BIOS upgrade to latest available version sorted out problem.
