    Terminal Screen won't stay open

Hi Forum, I note many references re best to not use root when doing general work in the terminal screen but when I try and log in as another user the screen disapears
With a server, can the users (windows xp pc's) use their login to login on a server terminal screen or do I need to create a new user for the server only??
Using Putty to get in as root but with so many warnings out there it is only time before the &$%@ hits the punker.
    Regards, Bill

You need to have a user account on the server, and allowing root access directly from "outside" the system is unsafe at best.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

My root access is from a lan terminal. but how do I make a new user ??
I know how to create "users" but if I use putty as one of them the terminal screen just closes? It doesn't close for root but it does for any other user.
Does this mean there are diff types of users??
