Installation Help
Hi,
I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop.
My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system.
I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva.
Which one could be a best possible for my installation.
As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install. If I can can some one guide me with all my questions.
Thanks in advance.
Help is really appreciated !

Hello!
If I am not mistaken, you may install the live CD to your system. either to run on one distro or as part of double boot. Say, Ubuntu/Fedora. I am not familiar though with the drivers but in my little experience, you can install them manually just in case they don't get to install automatically.I am using Ubuntu right now. Oh that's quite sad. I was able to make my wireless in Fedora 11 work with the help of the gurus here. Took quite a while though but I got it in the endThe problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Have you tried to post the outputs asked here...?Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers

I suggest you try all of them and afterwards, you would be in a better position to choose what distro fits your needs mostTaking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. Hello and welcome lasyn!

The only advantage I see with this is that should you encounter any issues and need help, you can have a lot of support from all your friends since you are using the same distro. However, I must say nothing really beats a decision that comes from a personal experience.
In my case, I had no friends to turn to when I first experimented using different flavors (9 all in all) except in this forums. And I am proud to say that I have learned through the patient guidance of the gurus who unselfishly shared their talents. I don't even know them personally but they helped.
In the end, the best Distro is the one that answers your personal needs best. That's one of the advantages of linux. IMHO
Good lunck!nujinini

Well, those are nice comments. I think I would be installing the fedora and I might need help from all the linux gurus. I think finding a wireless driver is always difficult in linux except for ubuntu which comes preinstalled.
I like the look and feel of suse. I installed 11.1 previously and that was the slowest linux i had ever seen. The look and feel is awesome i just love it. I do not know whether my monitor was configured well or not but whenever i scroll down it takes 3-5 seconds to actually go down and some part of screen was blur and some part was clear. I was just irritated and switched to ubuntu. But now i want to use another flavor of linux so was just getting comments from experts.
How is suse 11.2 and fedora 12 or 13 alpha i guess ?
I recently updated my ubuntu to 10.04 and it seems to be a little problem, the flash is slow, i cannot do presentation in openoffice very well, i tried installing microsoft office with wine but that did not help me. Had pretty bad experiences with ubuntu 10.04.
Can someone tell me good one among suse 11.2 and fedora 12

I have not used suse 11.2 but only 11.1 so I guess the others can answer it better.
I currently use Ubuntu 9.10, Linux Mint 7 and Fedora 10 multiboot with my XP.
I have opted not to upgrade my Fedora 10 at the moment since I feel that it is at its healthiest now. I don't want to fix something that's not broken
. And sometimes distro upgrades can also give some problems, sometimes
.
I have however experienced the least problems with my Linux Mint 7. Found it to be very stable and the drivers are all pre installed. Most of what I need I guess. (wireless & flash). You might also want to give it a try.
Wish you well!nujinini

Currently I am using fedora 12 and though i had problms in the begining as i am a complete newbie to linux I have gotten every thing to my needs as for the moment. And as of now i am very satisfied with it ... say i like it better than windows .. but if only i could use softwares like say, flash and flex I would feel like on TOP OF THE WORLD.. I was using ubunt 9.10 and i was pretty happy with it too as i had all the codecs needed come with it.. WINE surely is not someting i would try to use ..It cause me a lot of problems to ... I remember it was not leting me choose a drive to install my software ... was displaying only C and D drives while i Had 4 drives ...
Did you chk this site, I think you might find something useful here
