Question How to retrieve root password by realvnc?

    hi all.

I admin my server by realvnc with a non-root account(webmaster). I forgot root password but just a webmaster user remote control. Is there any way to retrieve the root password without sitting front the server? (I work far away from my server.)

    OS: centos 4.5
    Kernel: 2.6.9

not really, no. if you had setup sudo, you may be able to use that to reset the password, but you'd have to have the root pasword to set it up.

Thank you meton. I can't do sudo without root password.

Are there any hacker tools to do it(reset root password)?

not really. You could easily do it if you had access to the machine, but if there was a hacker tool to crack a root password, Linux wouldn't be very safe .

If you could get someone near the machine to boot single user mode, and reset the password, that would be the easiest, but you'd have to have someone nearby.

    sorry

Asking people on these forums for help in "hacking" root passwords is VERY, VERY bad form! The reason why you should not be able to from remote systems is very clear, and that it is very difficult to do so is one reason why Linux is much more secure than Windoze. Your problem. You deal with it!
