Just to Claify, your going
Physical Machine -> VMWare Workstation Machine (Centos) -> VMWare Server (running on Centos) -> VMWare image?
If so, I'm pretty sure you cant run a virtual machine, from inside another virtual machine.
Why are you trying to set it up this way? Why not just install VMWare server on whatever your host OS is?

Actually, you can do this, although it doesn't make a lot of sense. Google for the actual error message you're getting and you'll find answers on what to tweak. The error message is actually: "You may not power on a virtual machine in a virtual machine".

Indications from searching are that it does happen. Here's one post with specific instructions:

Nope, as I said, "indications from searching". My ESX-certified colleague looked at the post I gave a link to and said, "yeah, that looks like it should work." He said the backdoor setting is an insider thing, not commonly known and not supported. Like me, he didn't understand why anyone would want to try.
