    [SOLVED] Cannot install VLC, missing libx264.so.83.

    It's been days and I still haven't found out how to install VLC. It says it requires libx264.so.83. I have libx264, and some other package listed as what's available in the following output when I issue "yum install vlc"

    Code:
    [root@yoshii <myusername>]# yum install vlc-core
    Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
    Setting up Install Process
    Resolving Dependencies
    --> Running transaction check
    ---> Package vlc-core.i686 0:1.0.6-1.fc13 set to be updated
    --> Processing Dependency: libx264.so.83 for package: vlc-core-1.0.6-1.fc13.i686
    --> Finished Dependency Resolution
    Error: Package: vlc-core-1.0.6-1.fc13.i686 (rpmfusion-free)
               Requires: libx264.so.83
               Available: x264-libs-0.0.0-0.27.20100130git3659b81.fc13.i686 (rpmfusion-free)
     You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
     You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
    can anyone shed some light on this? I need/want VLC for some videos I have that wont play with MPlayer.

    None worked, and the yum install stuff doesn't find those packages Nevermind. I read somewhere that this is a problem on Fedora's repos. I'll just wait for them to fix this. In the meantime, I've installed multiple players for different fiiles.

    Thanks

    By the way, the rpm ones, I've tried that. Says:
    Code:
    could not do simulate: Can't install /home/<username>/Downloads/x264-libs-0.0.0-0.27.20100130git3659b81.fc13.i686 (4).rpm as no transaction

    What distribution+version of Linux are you running? If you are running current versions of RHEL/CentOS then .68 is the latest. For newer versions, you will have to download and build/install them from source. I had to do that for some newer applications such as the latest ffmpeg and chrome browser. I installed them in /usr/local instead of /usr, so I have to set my LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment to run them. FWIW, the latest versions of x264 is .98.
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

    Im running Fedora 13, btw

    In the software manager, it refuses to do anything when I try to install x264 devel files and stuff, and everything related to VLC. It just says "resolving dependencies", and then returns to idle.

    Im not really good at programming and more advanced linux stuff, so I'm posting what I can. Here's what I have been doing.

    By the way, how can I "force refresh" my repo list? Like as if it was just the first time I used it. Maybe this will help.

    EDIT:

    Nevermind. Got it to work. I reinstalled everything about FFMPEG (downloaded the source), then downloaded this file . I don't know why, but I tried that before, and it just worked now.

    Anyway, thanks for the info and stuff
