I don't know gnome themes enough to help you fix it, however as a last resort kinda thing, If you delete all directories under your home directory that are along the lines of
    /home/userid/.gconf* /home/userid/.gnome*

the directories will be recreated when you next login. Do note that this wipes all configuration settings for your userid only on that system. You will probably want to run from a terminal (if you want to do this)

    mv /home/userid/.gconf /home/userid/.gconf.backup

and so on. that way, if you mess up, you can move them back.

It will "fix" your issue, but it will cause you to lose your other settings, so it is a last resort kinda thing.

I used mac4lin while ago on my Debian machine so thats a behavior from the mac4lin theme but you can try this
    hit alt + F2 then type gconf-editor
then go to apps > metacity > general
Scroll down and look for the button layout option.
    you'll see something like
    Code:
    maximize,minimize,close:
    change it to
    Code:
    :maximize,minimize,close
hit return and they should move to the other side
    hopefully it works for you

The buttons are in the upper left corner on OS-X.

You got what you asked for when you installed a Mac theme.
