Hello and welcome to the forums!

As for issues between MS and Linux, I don't think Microsoft is a big fan of Linux, but otherwise you should be fine to install Linux alongside Windows. Do let us know how it goes.

Thank you; the way I understand it is if I load Linux on a system running MS it will wipe my hard drive, is this true? I'm a little ignorant in this area. Trying very hard to learn Linux.

No, it won't do that unless you direct the Linux installer to do so. It's best to start off with some unallocated space on your hard drive, then you direct the Linux installer to use that space for Linux. You can even setup the partitions for Linux in advance of doing the installation if you wish. If you plan to run Windows and Linux on the same box as a dual-boot system, it's also best to install Windows first.

To be on safer side, back up data before starting installation. Use PartedMagic LiveCD/USB to shrink/resize existing partition(s) and create free space for Linux. Make sure to select free space during Linux installation.

If you have any confusion regarding Partition Structure, boot up from LiveCD and execute fdisk -l command in Terminal. Post output here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
