Unhappy New Linux user... YUM issues

    Hey guys,

I am very new to linux and I am running into an issue....

I've gotten soem new HP blade servers and they cam installed with RHEL 5.3

I need to update them to RHEL 5.4

I register them with my rhn subscription, then once I see my systems online, i run yum update from the command line.

It seems to find a ton of updates and takes a long while to DL everything.

Do I have to tell it to install the downloads? I don't think I do...

I get some errors about timing out for the last few updates.

theni reboot, but when i check redhat-release it still says 5.3

    what am i doing wrong?

so on one of the machines, the updates completed. After reboot i still get:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga)

it said there were 577 packages to be updated or installed.

it looks like it skipped quite a few of them.

Like it would go from 330/577 to 334/577 to 341/577

the other machine didn't complete the installs. it gave me this output:

    Code:

and it also comes back as 5.3 after reboot!

These machines have no CD drive so i can't install from that.

I guess i need to figure out how to install from a iso image....

Looks to me like the server is timing out. Problem on their end and not on yours. Try later and see if things are better?

Unless the file /etc/redhat-release was updated it will always say 5.3.

You don't seem to be doing anything wrong. If the problems continue and you have time maybe you could update a few files at a time?

    Thanks for your reply!

Is that true that the red-release file needs to be updated to say 5.4?

    I'll have more info later.

I believe that is where the info is retrieved.
    Code:
    [glenn@redhat ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.5 (Tikanga)

    [glenn@redhat ~]$ uname -ra
    Linux redhat 2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 #1 SMP Wed Jun 23 10:58:38 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    Gotcha.

So it turns out my rhn subscription had expired and RedHat says they won't allow updates from their repository.

So I was doing everything right.

But what I don't understand is why they showed me the updates and let me DL them but then not install them?

    Something strange is going on.

That may account for ther missing numbers of the updates!
