    i am new to linux can anyone suggest free service monitoring tool to monitor services in our linux server r any script available and automatically mail to sysadmin when service stop.kindly suggest me.

    Just for the record, there is a slight difference between monitoring and alerting

    For a start, Munin - Trac is a nice and easy to setup monitoring tool.
    I like and use yellow : Xymon - Status @ Wed Sep 01 12:46:01 2010 for the alerting of our datacenters.
    Then there is of course Nagios - The Industry Standard in IT Infrastructure Monitoring
    ..and surely several more, just search the usual spots: freshmeat/sourceforge/etc

    how to install munin in linux .i downloaded munin.tar.gz in my local path.how to install it.

    You can also use monit.
    It's pretty simple.
