What is your video hardware? Login as root to a command-line and run the command lspci. Post the output of that here. Then, post the contents of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf here as well.

    Hello and Welcome.
When you issue the command, it is case sensitive in Linux, so the command to issue would be:
    Code:
    cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
It looks like you have an ATI chipset for Video and sound. I'm not too sure if RHEL has a direct download for that but you can probably download the Linux driver from their website.
    Graphics Drivers & Software
Keep a look out for the installer instructions in that link also. Is there a particular reason you are using RHEL? It's not the latest and greatest Desktop version in my opinion.

Actually, I think you can use just about any version/flavor to learn programming with. I just think it will be easier for you as a newbie to use a more popular and current distro that has better hardware support. But on the other hand, if your university gave you this disc, they may want you to use that. As far as home/school work, we have very strict policy about not allowing school work, see the forum rules. I don't mind pointing you in the right direction but just don't outright ask people to solve your problem for you and I think you'll be okay.
