    winbind keeps writing messages to log

    I have a few Redhat 8 servers that I have shut the winbind service off, yet I see lots of message int he /var/log/messages log in regards to winbind. The message i am seeing are

    pam_winbind[25640]: write to socket failed!
    pam_winbind[25640]: internal module error (retval = 3, us
    er = `root'

    There is a lot of these messages in the log. I'm wondering how they can be getting generated.

    You get the errors in /var/log/messages *because* you shut down winbind.
    As pam_winbind tries to access it, but cant.

    Other than that:
    rh8 was released in 2002.
    You might want to consider an update...
