Disabling nouveau / installing NVIDIA driver

    Hi all!

    First some specs:
    Fedora 13 (Goddard) 32-bit
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260

The DVI output on my card works just fine to my monitor, which is what I've been using. I installed no drivers; it just worked. However, now I need a duplicate screen to be given via the s-video output, but it doesn't work. Nothing is being given to the tv and nothing is being detected under monitors. From what I understand, this is because I need to install the appropriate Driver.

I downloaded my driver from the nvidia website, but it won't install. it tells me I need to disable nouveau. The problem is, I have no idea how to do that. Any help?

I had a similar problem recently. I believe this link should help.

uh thats a lot of info to figure out... and the only thing i really saw in there was a command that i'm supposed to run for fedora 12/13 AFTER installing the driver. However, the driver won't install, so I'm not sure what to do...

Also it says to use yum to install the drivers. I'm assuming I'm supposed to follow the directions under "GEForce 2" since my card is a GEForce GTX 260, and it says to use yum to install "kmod-nvidia-96xx" but I don't know what to replace the "xx" with. I don't even see the need to use yum since i already downloaded the .run file from nvidia.

It really seems like there should be a simpler way to just disable nouveau so the installer won't give me that error any more.

How to disable nouveau and use binary NVIDIA from nvidia.com - FedoraForum.org
This is a problem in Fedora, or rather a feature of Fedora....that link should help you disable it. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Alright MikeTbob, we're getting closer. That thread led me to this one and I got to step 12, the actual driver installation. It tells me that it can't find the linux source, which i thought is what i installed in step 9. it says to provide the source location if it's already installed, but I don't know how to find that.

"yum install kernel-devel" gives "already installed. nothing to do". Probably because I already installed it in step 9 on that link i gave.

My bad, I meant to say kernel-headers. Make sure that's installed too.

It is indeed already installed seems i just need the location of my source so i can provide it to the installer as an argument... not that I'm even sure how to do that, but I can probably find that via --help...

Your source should be at /usr/src/linux or /usr/src/kernel-name.
