    ping: sendto: Host is down

    Hi,

I've installed RHEL 5.3 few days back. When I try to ping the remote server it returns

ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 4
    ping: sendto: Host is down
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 5

I can ping the local host from the remote mac systems and also ping the server from the server's command prompt. But when I try to ping the remote server from the PC/Mac it get the above error.

    Any help would be appreciated

    Andrew

    Please explain the setup.

    - how many machines are involved?
    - what is the name of each?
    - what is the IP/netmask of each?
    - what is the default gateway of each?
    - are there static routes?
    - are all links on the NICs and the switch up?
    - how are the machines physically connected?

We've only one machine attached to that ip addr

When I checked for the server ip it says the inet addr is 129.174.54.177 and bcast 129.174.55.255

but when I try to ping the images.gmu.edu from a remote client machine it looks for 129.174.55.230

    PING images.gmu.edu (129.174.55.230): 56 data bytes
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 3
ping: sendto: No route to host
    Request timeout for icmp_seq 4

    Is something going wrong

    Then ping the IP 129.174.54.177.
If this works, then the DNS setup is wrong.
