DVD disappears and permission issues
I tried to use my DVD drive and it does not mount. If I boot the system on XP I can read / and write to the drive so I know it works.
If I look in /mnt, there's nothing, and if I try to create a DVD folder there I get warned that I don't have permission to make a folder in mnt. As a matter of fact I can't make a folder ANYWHERE but my home directory without logging in as a superuser
I don't get that. Why not? Has linux gotten so secure that it's useless to me? How can I log in as permanently as root and accept the fact that I may "shoot myself in the foot" with that kind of power
Oh, one more thing? A Password to set the time? Isn't that a bit extreme?
TIA,

Hello and Welcome.
Try looking in /media only after you have mounted the drive. If I look in /mnt, there's nothing
Yes, that's how Linux rolls......you can't just create, delete, modify files all willy nilly....only Superuser/root can do that.if I try to create a DVD folder there I get warned that I don't have permission to make a folder in mnt. As a matter of fact I can't make a folder ANYWHERE but my home directory without logging in as a superuser
See this link before you commence to shooting yourself in foot.....take pictures of foot after shooting please.I don't get that. Why not? Has linux gotten so secure that it's useless to me? How can I log in as permanently as root and accept the fact that I may "shoot myself in the foot" with that kind of power
