    disable any servers/daemons that you don't need..

    you could also recompile all of the daemons you start with better optimization and less 'features'...
    Their code will be beautiful, even if their desks are buried in 3 feet of crap. - esr

    1>using the chkconfig command you can turn on/off services for a particular run level..Thus if you want to turn off xinetd for level 3 you say the command
    chkconfig --level 3 xintetd off .

    normally you boot in Run level 5. If you want to have a list of all the services that are on/off you can use the command chkconfig --list

    2>Another method for reducing the boot time is to remove all the nfs file systems from the fstab file and mount them only after the system is booted.Same with Samba file systems. They can be mounted and unmounted as and when required .

    service manager found on desktop menu -> system controls ->internet-control -> services

    I've speed up my laptop by disabling graphical boot. Just remove rhgb from grub.conf
