Need a help
Hi every one,
I am very new to Linux.
I joined IT industry 8 months back but I got some Windows Packaging work.
I am IT graduate in 2009.
And I want to be a Linux System programmer (Like Kernel programming, device driver programming) and some challenging work in Linux platform.
Simply I want to change my technology to Linux programming and I have a good understanding with BASH Shell Scripting.
But , I am confuse about --- Form where I start to achieve my dream.
Can anyone suggest me on this.
I just want my technical path step by step form ground level.Last edited by kunjesh_singh; 12-20-2010 at 11:15 AM.

Hi there,
What you are after is not a simple or quick process, however if you are serious then here are some pointers.
The kernel and all of the drivers are written almost entirely in C so you will have to learn how to program in C. If you search you should find some simple (and complicated) tutorials to get you started.
After the tutorials I would suggest you get your hands on a big programming guide book and follow it from cover to cover. I bought an O'Reily book to learn Java and it was pretty good.
Strictly speaking you could just head straight for the kernel hacking goodness, and have a word with Linux Kernel Newbies - Linux Kernel Newbies, but I would get a solid grounding in normal programs first; userspace is much more forgiving.
The small tasks at kernelnewbies are under the Janitors project, more involved things can be found just by poking around.
If you have more questions then please ask, and also let us know how you get on.To be good, you must first be bad. "Newbie" is a rank, not a slight.

Hi kakariko81280,
Thank you for your great reply, It really helps me.
Actually I have a good knowledge of C language (But in windows platform). I used turbo C (TC) compiler for doing my practice in college days.
And nowadays I am doing practice with GCC compiler (I am not a very proficient programmer in C, But I have good understanding with C).
The problem is – I am working in windows at office and I want to change my technical domain.
I have good understanding with Linux (RedHat – command line)(But not in admin part just BASH scripting) and C language and I am keep working to improve my C knowledge.
So what should I learn after or with C.
And if any certification help me, So please suggest me.
thanks,
Kunjesh
