    when it starts it shows the version number

    Press your right mouse on the panel, and select about Gnome.
    This will show what current version you are using.

    thanks, i was trying to figure out if i unknowingly updated to fc3 by running "yum update" ( i noticed my kernel image is 2.6.9)
