    Install CentOS with live cd?

is it possible to install CentOS onto a hard drive, or external drive with a live CD? If so, how would I go about doing so?

    Hello and welcome!

Download the proper ISO file for your machine, burn it to disk as an image, then boot your machine with the newly created disk and choose the install or upgrade option that you'd prefer to use:

    www.centos.org - centos.org downloads

Here are some HowTo articles to help you get the job done:

    Installation Guide

Note that CentOS is basically Red Hat but without the logos and other artwork so they often use the same documentation.

    Good luck with your install.

I don't think the CentOS live cd is installable by default. You can however install from the full cd or dvd set available from the CentOS mirrors.

daark.child, it appears that a liveCD is available when looking at this downloads page:

    Index of /pub/linux/distributions/centos/5.5/isos/x86_64

However, I don't know if it offers an install option, or if it's one of those that only runs as a liveCD.

Edit: oops, never mind... I misunderstood your post at first but reread it and with you now.

If there's an install option on the CentOS 5.5 live CD I couldn't find it. I wound up just downloading all 7 isos for the ancient machine I'm trying CentOS on (CD is not DVD enabled). With the Net install option you have to already have the ISO on the HD or external HD or somewhere it can be found. When people think liveCD and with every other distro I'm familiar with the install image resides out on a mirror and you don't have to download the ISO image THEN the live CD ISO, burn the live CD ISO and THEN install.

I see the same issue with the 5.4 liveDVD. Well, given how slow CentOS is getting these days to sync with RHEL I have migrated to SL6 (Scientific Linux 6). The LiveDVD has an install option from the boot menu as well as from the UI.

Yes, I always preferred SL over centOS as an RHEL alternate, though their wireless support sucks. I'm helpless there crying like a baby .

SL6 has done a lot to deal with the wireless support issues. It works at least as well as my laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 and later. Bluetooth stuff that didn't work at all on CentOS 5.5 works flawlessly now, including switching input/output to my headset for use with Skype. It was useless before...
