[SOLVED] CD/DVD not recognised
Hi, I have the Fedora 12 OS. For unknown reasons I have lost the sound. I cannot play music cd's but more important I cannot install Fedora 14 from the dvd I have bought. My pc complete the check on the disk, which was ok, but then a message came up saying that no cd/dvd could be found so the installation failed. I am unable to get into 'sound' to adjust anything.
Does anyone have the answer please.

Can you play mp3 files that are already on your system?
Did you replace the CD drive with the DVD drive or are they both installed?

No, I cannot get anthing at the moment. The CD & DVD are both installed.
From when I lost the sound, my spreadsheets and all documents only covered about 2/3rds of the available desktop area. Whether this has a bearing on the problem I really don't know but I thought I should mention it.

I found this, but it may or may not pertain to you, I'm not sure but you can try.
FC 13 / 12 Live CD boot error (no root device found) -Fix | LinuxReaders
Are you sure the disk check was good? It sounds like you have a defective disk because it's having so many problems. Can you test the DVd on another machine?Last edited by MikeTbob; 02-21-2011 at 03:44 PM. Reason: Typos

OK, not sure what is going on here. Have you tried to install and skip the 'test media' part? Is the CDRom empty when you install?
As for the sound if you are running KDE press 'ATL+F2' and type in kmix to get the sound mixer settings. Might be the volume is turned all the way down.
Another thing you could try is to run alsamixer in a terminal window.

Good morning Lazydog, and everyone else who offered to help.
Success !. I did as you suggested and skipped the test run on the disc , it loaded Fedora 14 without any problem .Many thanks for your help.
I 've now got a printer installation problem which I will put in a new post.
Kind regards

Yes, the sound problem was resolved, in fact everything was back to normal after I had installed Fedora 14.
The only problem I have now is getting the Lexmark printer to be recognised. I have opened a new post which I beleive is the correct procedure.
Thank you for enquiring about the sound.
Kind regards
jth
