[SOLVED] once grub was installed automatically with Fedora install
sda win xp
sdb Fedora 14
There is a problem (I can see) with F14 install.
In the past the grub was installed during install (since Fedora 6).
Now choosing an install disk "sdb" (install target
drive) requests a drive to be chosen for
bootloader, but if the alternate drive sda is
chosen (this case the XP drive), it is formatted.
I have gone though install many times to see what I missed.
This once worked beautifully. What did I miss???
I now have XP and Fedora 14 installed but I cannot reach Fedora 14.
I had to do a fixmbr to get to XP
Since I cannot reach F14, I cannot get to grub2 and have to use .97
- 03-16-2011 #2I am not getting it. Fedora 14 uses GRUB Legacy (.97) by default. Are you trying to install GRUB2? If you are using GRUB Legacy right now, doesn't Fedora 14 boot up with it?Since I cannot reach F14, I cannot get to grub2 and have to use .97It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

here is a little more info
I had to reinstall XP AND F14
I installed successfully grub 2 under F14
then under F14: grub-install /dev/sda
but the grub gui "other" would NOT allow XP to boot
something else I did made grub gui not even load F14
Now all I have is the rescue disk for F14 that has only grub .97
Thanks for your patience
Grub in the past has been easy
- 03-17-2011 #5First You installed GRUB2 and then GRUB Legacy. Why are you installing two Boot Loaders and can't go with default one?I installed successfully grub 2 under F14 then under F14: grub-install /dev/sda
Could you post the contents of GRUB Configuration file here?It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

forgetting the past...I need to know what I should have done
my original post I described the OS layout on the scsi drives
let us say XP boots OK and runs
I installed F14 and it works.
I installed grub2 and did :
grub-install /dev/sda (where XP resides)
I have tried many things.
Before grub 2 was installed, I tried to install the grub loader using grub .97 and it went well but the loader didn't work
It would at first load F14 but not XP
is that any clearer?

How did you install GRUB2 in first place? Fedora 14 uses GRUB Legacy by default.
Above command is GRUB Legacy installation and it has nothing to do with XP. grub-install /dev/sda command installs Boot Loader in MBR not in the boot sector of partition.grub-install /dev/sda (where XP resides)
Are you using any special tool to install GRUB2? iirc, Fedora installer doesn't install GRUB2 by default. GRUB Legacy is default boot loader of Fedora 14.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I installed grub2 using instructions on the grub site.
I checked the version and it was OK.
Then what was the correct grub2 command...actually I used some option
grub-install <some option> /dev/sda
If I could boot F14 I installed I could tell you.
In order to move forward, can we concentrate on the current situation and how to move forwardLast edited by landonmkelsey; 03-17-2011 at 02:31 AM. Reason: addition
- 03-17-2011 #9Could you post the link of that website?I installed grub2 using instructions on the grub site.

making the situation much better
I do not mind at all reinstalling F14. It was a fresh install and should be a snap to reinstall.
So the problem is:
We have XP on sda and forget anything else.
I reinstall F14 and then what?
BTW there exist 2 types of F14 install disks (DVD)
(1) rescue disk/install disk the "fat" one
(2) the quick minimal install disk (not a rescue) install a minimal F14 in minutes
I have bothLast edited by landonmkelsey; 03-17-2011 at 04:09 AM.
