man ifconfig
For your cablenet connection, you'll probably need the Roaring Penguin's PPPoE client.
It should be there in RH9 by default. It's called rp-pppoe. There are many HOWTOs available on the internet that show how to configure it.
If you don't have it, get it from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pengui...e_rp-pppoe.phpThe Unforgiven

rp-pppoe is for DSL only. It shouldn't work with cable internet providers. Cable internet (from the 4 or 5 companies I have dealt with) is a simple DHCP setup.
For RH 9, docs for setting this up are located here:

Best,

In India, cable internet is also provided as PPP over Ethernet..

PPPoE has its own RFCs - it's a matured standard. The Unforgiven

If you follow the internet configuration wizard from system setting it will be easy to figure it out.
