    Directory Structure under Linux?

    Hello All,

I recently migrated my hosting over from a Microsoft to Linux based package, primarily because I wanted to use Wordpress.

Is there any special significance to the directory structure under such hosting? I have seen on a friends hosting through a different supplier that he has folders such as public_html and a few others. My package came with no folders at all, it was entirely blank so I merely created one folder for each domain name I own and pointed the domain to its folder. All my web pages reside within the named folder. They seem to be working OK so I don't have an immediate problem but I was wondering whether things like search engine spiders expect to see a particular directory structure. Or if there I any other compelling reason for any specific folders to be present.

    Can anyone advise?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Linux based package,
I don't know what that means. Most Linux systems have web server files in sub-directories under /var/www, either html or htdocs. Opensuse and Suse Linux use /srv/www. All the distributions I've used also have a public_html directory in /home/user directory.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for?

That's just it. My Linux server had no sub directories at all.

I created folders with the same name as each of my domains and uploaded my html files into the respective folders. I then pointed the domains to the folders and all appears to be OK.

My question really is: Are the server sub folders that are normally present, such as public_html, essential for any particular purpose. Does it matter that they are missing from my web server?

Really, those folders can be created anytime you like. They mainly serve as a convenient place to point your domains to.
