    New OS for Server

I am running my web and game server on ubuntu 8.04 lts and am considering in reinstalling a new OS. I would like to try another different OS(most probably CentOS or Debian and I saw alot of good comments about them). I'm not sure what version I am going to install. I searched on websites of companies that rents dedicated servers and noticed that they mainly use Debian 4 or 5 and CentOS 5 or 4.7. I would like you to tell me which versions do you prefer for CentOS and Debian servers.

If its a new install, just go with the latest versions. The reason for this is that they'll be supported for longer than the older versions. These days CentOS are a bit slow at putting out releases and patches. You may want to take a look at Scientific Linux which is quite similar to CentOS (they are both free RHEL rebuilds).

That may be a while... SL6 has been out for almost 6 months (released officially about 3 months ago) now. I'm using it for my business without any serious issues.

Scientific Linux is in use at major laboratories all round the world, as well as in businesses. The main SL development team is at Fermi National Lab in Illinois, and at CERN, as well as having personnel at Argonne National Laboratory and other places. Our tax $$ at work...

It maybe a long wait. Just go with Scientific Linux. You are not really missing anything by choosing it over CentOS.

Whenever I do a deploy I normally stick with the tried and true Fedora but I normally go back a version or 2 or stick with whatever the equivalent of the current RHEL version is. Right now most of my servers run FC6 which at the time equated to RHEL v5. Now I switched up to FC13 to match RHEL v6. I mainly do this for a sense of stability instead of feeling that I have to update every 6 months.
