    How to install mplayer

    Hi,

I'm trying to install mplayer(=DVD-player) on my system. In fact it means compiling from source code.

But I don't know how to compile from source code (Don't know the exact commands).

If anybody could help me out, that would be great. I'm kind a newbie to Linux. So ....

    Kind regards,Ralf.

Why compile from source. Use yum.
    Code:
    yum -y install vlc

    Multimedia/DVD - FedoraProject

This guide (starting at #6) will show you how to install an abundance of non-free software, more than you really need, but you can pick and choose.

    No package available

I got following response from the system:

    Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
    Setting up Install Process
    No package vlc available.
    Error: Nothing to do

    Package seems not be available.

Is there another way to install mplayer or VLC?

    Kind regards,Ralf.

The guide I posted above has info on how to install VLC, mplayer, and many other things. You need to enable the 3rd party RPMFusion repository.

If you want to play commecial dvds, you may also need to add the livna repository and install libdvdcss.

Livna merged with rpmfusion in 2008.

Doesn't your OS provide some graphical package installer?

Since you are posting in Fedora, here is a good web site to add the stuff not included on the distro install media. See the url The Unofficial Fedora FAQ.
