Help Using TigerVNC Server to Windows Client

    Hi!

I was able to sort out configuring TigerVNC in my Scientific Linux 6 and was able to make me see my own dekstop in VNC.

I installed TigerVNC in another machine running Windows 7 (starter).

May I ask for help how can I be able to connect these two machines in VNC. We are networked by a router at home.

I want to make SL6 as server and Windows 7 as client.

    Thank you as always,

    regards,

What difficulty are you having connecting the Windows VNC client to your VNC server? I use TightVNC on Windows, and it's pretty much a "just works". I'd expect Tiger VNC client to be the same.

    Thank you for your response!

What difficulty are you having connecting the Windows VNC client to your VNC server?
    Pretty much everything.

These are what I have done so far.

    1) Installed TigerVNC on SL6 and was able to see my own desktop because it logs me in after I type

    "Server: localhost.localdomain:1" "Password: xxxxx"

I am logged in as root.

    2) In windows 7, I installed TiverVNC but when I click on the main menu and the box appears, I don't know what to type in the server: xxxxx and when I don't know how to configure a password too.

It gives me an error report. "No password configured for..."

    3) If I want to use SL6 as Server and Windows 7 as client, may I please ask what would be the steps to take? I should log in SL6 TigerVNC that's for sure but I think in order for it to see Windows 7, I also have to turn on TiverVNC too?

I really don't know what to do being a total newbie in servers.

    Thanks again, regards,

I'm not familiar with tiger or tiver vnc but in TightVNC, the easiest way would be log in via a java enabled web browser. Open your Windows 7 browser and type in the address bar:
    Code:
    http://address_to_sl6:5801
It will ask for the server's password. Input it and press enter.

    Thank you Dapper Dan!

I restarted the vncserver in my SL6

I typed both these addresses in Mozilla on Windows 7 machine but still can't connect. It gives me these error reports.

    localhost.localdomain:5801

    and

    192.168.1.2:5801

    The connection has timed out

The server at 192.168.1.2 is taking too long to respond.

    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.

    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.

    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Here again, I'm not sure about TigerVNC. Is it pretty much the same as TightVNC in startup and configuration? Does it give you a choice of port for vnc to connect to? To start vnc on the server, try (as a regular user):
    Code:
    vncserver :2
    Then, from Firefox/Windows 7:
    Code:
    http://192.168.1.2:5802
If everything is within the same network, a blocked port shouldn't be an issue. Do you have a firewall installed and operational on the server?

All I ever do is simply get the IP# of the other machine; open up a browser and go. The config part of the VNC will tell you the default port #; Perhaps you put in a password for say the config or the program or both ?

Another thought just occurred. I'm using the other VNC protocol and I can vnc from windows XP to windows 2000 w/o any issues; perhaps the router is stopping things ?
Go get a copy of wireshark and start it up on the Linux side and then try it again ; if you like I can debug the wireshark for you if you want.
    Let me know

    Linux/Unix/BSD/Solaris/AIX
Yeah I do all of these; most of them since 1983

FWIW, here is the ipconfig output of the windows 7 machine. You might spot a thing or two.

I am transferring to the linux machine to get wireshark.

    EDIT:

Got it. May I know how to proceed please?

Looks like I got everything OK up to here. What would be my next step please?

    Hi Dapper Dan,

Sorry but I'm not familiar with TightVNC. My first time doing this stuff.

However, I restarted by as root. Doesn't allow as regular user.

    Code:
    [root@localhost ~]# service vncserver restart
Shutting down VNC server: 2:jun [ OK ]
    Starting VNC server: 2:jun
New 'localhost.localdomain:2 (jun)' desktop is localhost.localdomain:2

    Starting applications specified in /home/jun/.vnc/xstartup
    Log file is /home/jun/.vnc/localhost.localdomain:2.log

                                                               [ OK ]
    [root@localhost ~]# vncserver

New 'localhost.localdomain:4 (root)' desktop is localhost.localdomain:4

    Starting applications specified in /root/.vnc/xstartup
    Log file is /root/.vnc/localhost.localdomain:4.log

    [root@localhost ~]#
    Then I typed 192.168.1.2:5802

on windows firefox browser but still can't.
