Dell E6510 with Intel Integrated gfx: I get 800x600 instead of 1920x10

I have Dell E6510 laptop with Intel Integrated graphics card Ironlake. I've just installed SL 6 but GNOME runs only in 800x600 resolution using vesa driver. If I go to Display->Hardware->Video card and set the driver to i810 or Intel experimental the X Server cannot start. I have the same issue with CentOS 5.6.

This is a known problem that was fixed in future kernel versions such as 2.6.39:

It looks like I need to apply the latest Intel 2011Q1 graphics package:

Could you point me to the instructions how to do it.

    Thank you!

Note: Unfortunately I cannot post the link to the to the bug report and Intel graphics package b/c I have less than 15 posts.

Yes. I think you will need to download and install the driver from Intel, since the SL6 kernel is 2.6.32, and there were a LOT of changes after 2.6.32. What does the output of 'lspci' say about the video hardware? Perhaps there is another driver that you can install. The VESA driver is basically a fall-back for use when nothing else will work.

'lspci' says many things but concerning video adapter:

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

How do I apply that graphics patch?

    Thanks!

There should be additional information about the controller if you use the -v option. Try that, and post the output for the video adapter here. We need more information about the chip set and such, which the -v option should provide.

Here is the package from Intel that contains the needed fix.

    How can apply this package?

Ok. This is one of those weird configurations where the Intel UMA video is used for standard video output, and there is a discrete nVidia chip set for graphics acceleration. I've seen a number of posts where people were having problems getting these configurations to work well with Linux, which is probably because it really needs two video drivers. At this point, I'm not sure if there is much you can do to fix it. Dell only supports Windows on this system...

There is no NVIDIA on my laptop, it's a single Intel HD integrated graphics card. My laptop has i5-560 CPU so there is no way it can be Intel UMA gfx.

Rubberman, you have no idea what you are talking about, aren't you...
