Mouse not working after detaching and re-attaching
Hi. I have a PDSI TS230 server running redhat. I inadvertantly unplugged the mouse cable from the back. When I re insert it, the mouse not longer works. It looks like the system does not detect it anymore. Does anyone know how I can get the system to notice the mouse without rebooting the entire system? Thanks, Jon.

PS/2 or USB mouse?

Well, I have unplugged my PS/2 trackball/mouse from my workstation/server without needing to reboot. If you plug it right back in, the system hardware manager might not even see the disconnection. If it is left disconnect for a few seconds, then it will, and it may take a bit of time to reconnect (up to 30 seconds or a minute or so). What version of Red Hat are you running. Older versions may not reconnect quite so easily. I'm running SL6 (RHEL 6).

Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 4). For me, it does not seem to ever reconnect. Is there some command that can force a reconnect?

That's a very old release that is no longer under long-term support as far as I know. I would not be surprised if it doesn't recover from disconnected hardware very well. You really should make some upgrade plans, otherwise your system is likely to suffer from serious security issues.

Once something similar happened to me ,as a last resource I crashed the X server (the graphical environment) with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, once it respawned the mouse was detected Ok, if the X server doesnt respawn you may need to launch it manually with the startx command.
Good luck.
