Red Hat .vs. Fedora for remote access

    Hello,

This is my first post here. I work at a major hospital and I have Ubuntu Linux on my home and test PC. Now I used to have Vista and now find I cannot use the remote desktop to connect to the hospitals server.

Now the adminstration says the ONLY linux that works is Red Hat and Firefox 1.01 (I think.)

Now the question. would Fedora give me the same type of access or do I really need Red Hat?

    Thanks!

    Hello and Welcome!

Depending on the software in question, you should be able to use Fedora. It's pretty much the testbed for RH.
If, however, your admin says RHEL is the way to go, you could just get setup with CentOS. It's a direct clone of RHEL, with the company branding removed.

    Afterthought:

You will probably want to ask them about that FireFox version. FF1 is very old.

    Thanks.

    Their documentation said Firefox 1.1.

Tonight I'll download Fedora and do a dual boot and see what happens.

Being a MVS/CICS/COBOL guy from way back is making this challenging!

Given the specification for FF 1.1, my guess is that the version of RHEL is an old one - probably RHEL 4. Check with the hospital IT people first or you may just spin your wheels. You can get CentOS 3 or 4, which are clones of RHEL 3 or 4. Alternatively, there is Scientific Linux, which is also a free clone of RHEL, found here: Scientific Linux - Welcome to Scientific Linux (SL) - our tax dollars at work!

Ok I got Terminal Service Client to get on using RDP.

But it as small screen size. Tonight I'll try the 'use specified screen size' and see if I can get a full screen (that or a microscope to read the SmartTerm and ISPF screens!)

Still can't get Remote Desktop but I was told there was a RDP package for it (my friend, Rick, said he uses Ubuntu Desktop and he gets on our system all the time from home!

So maybe I'll stick with Ubuntu for now as long as I can get it connected and work done!

    Thanks.
