As long as the /boot partition wasn't overwritten then all that is needed is as you say boot into a Live distro that uses GRUB legacy. I tend to use the Fedora install disk and boot into the repair option. Then type:

grub-install /dev/sda

and it will now boot into GRUB menu as before.
