gdm is the Gnome Display Manager that provides a gui login screen and starts your window manager(s) as required. 1) are you sure you have gnome properly installed? 2) are you starting with runlevel 5? If not starting at runlevel 5, how are you trying to start gdm?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Did you change anything in GDM conf file? Installed new theme etc. ?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Show your GDM config file(s):
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf
/etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf
/etc/gdm/custom.conf
You can run this command to show if any GDM files have been modified (like the conf file):
Code:rpm -qV gdm
