    Fedora 12 Network Card Issue

Hi there, I'm extremely new to Linux so please bare with me...

So, I am on a Gateway NV5942u laptop. I originally had Windows 7 installed, and now I have dual booted a Fedora 12 OS beside Windows 7. The boot works fine, everything is successful.

Except one thing - my network card. Linux cannot seem to detect my network card. I have tried commands such as "ifconfig" and, as advised by my professor, "ifup eth0". None of these have worked. If you need further info, please tell me which commands to punch in and I'll provide you with everything you need.

Keep in mind: I'm so new that I'm just learning how to navigate and make directories and such.

    Thanks, Ryan.

    Hello and Welcome!

Just a little FYI to start with, but Fedora 12 is now outdated and will not be receiving any more updates. See here. So unless there is a specific need for Fedora 12, you may want to look into installing a newer version such as 14 or 15.

But if you're needing to work with this version, let's get some info on the system. Open up a terminal and execute the following commands:
    Code:
    lspci
    Code:
    lsmod
    Code:
    ifconfig -a
    Post the results back here.

And I would love to update Fedora to the latest version, but I've heard it's much easier to do it over the network.
Also... I was wondering if I lack a better kernel. I know I have less than 3, and I've seen a thread or two that said 3.0 has better wireless NIC coverage.

    Thanks for reply.

Actually, the easiest option would be to download a newer version and burn it to a CD/DVD.
You can do this with your Windows computer.

Fedora Project - Download Fedora and try it.

Ok, I'll keep it in mind. That aside, any way to detect my Network Card on Fedora 12?

It was a known bug in Fedora 12 that caused your NIC to go unrecognized.
    Taken from Bug 525966.

S0 to get it going, do the following:
Open a terminal and gain root privileges with su -.
    Do the following commands:
    Code:
    modprobe -r tg3
    Code:
    modprobe broadcom
    Code:
    modprobe tg3
This will be required after every boot, unless it was patched in a later update.
If that's still the case, follow the steps in comment #21 on that page.
